I think that advergaming is a terrible idea from a consumer stand point. the first problem is that the advertisment might show up at an inoppertune time making your character die, this would make any player frustrated and less likely to buy that product. the next problem is the if like many advertisements you can't make it go away it would be on the screen for a long time just sitting there taking up screen room.
I don't mind in game advertising. It's been going on for years and it has never bothered me, sometimes it even adds to the realism of the game.
To the post by Marth, I think you're misunderstanding what in game advertising is. For the most part the advertising is kept minimal, whether it be on a bulliten board, a poster, etc. Advterisements don't just pop up on the player, that would greatly discourage players and it wouldn't work at a marketing standpoint.
I dont think advertisingin games is as efective as they think it is. for instance, I've played a game called battlefield 2142 for about a year and it wasnt untill about a month ago that I realized there were ads in the game. maybe thats just because the ads were placed on in game props so there were sort of inocuous and blended in with the rest of the game. Billizard does something similar with battle.net but the ads are outside the game and are more easily noticed so in that sence this method is much more successful.
I believe advergaming is totally worth it, it makes the games you are playing seem way more realistic and it also gives companies business. Like if theres a mcdonalds banner somewhere in a game and you see it and are hungry your going to be like "MMM some mcdonalds sounds really good right now" Or in a racing car game it gives you the options to choose between different models of cars or what brand modifications you want to do to your car etc.
This week i played super mario brothers on the regualr nintendo and on my comptuer. Its weird to see how different it is playing on the computer and an actual game console. I was able to get to the 8th world on the nintendo (using cheats to get to different worlds) but it took me many tries just to beat the first world let alone the first few levels. I dont usually play computer games but I though that it would be interesting to compare. I definately like the game console better.
Eh I think it's worth the effort. I mean I definitely don't mind it when it comes to racing car games because the feeling of taking out a $250,000 Lamborghini Murcielago on a wall...man. You can't have that kind of experience anywhere else unless that kind of money is pocket change for you. but when it comes to virtual world kind of games like Neopets has up a butt load of advertising and I personally hate it. It ruins the fantasy for me and becomes another "sell out" point.
Side note: This kid whose father owned a nice Lambo decided to have a little party and I guess the dad didn't hide the keys well cause someone at the party found them and decided to take it on a little spin thinking it was going to be like the video games. Long story short...the kid crashes it not even down the street and gets in LOADS of trouble for it. So don't try it kids!

Even so... its probably worth doing, but I dont think its is going t o be nearly as effective as add]s on the tv or on the radio.
